Solstice Sunrise Walk
22 Jun 2019 @ 4:30am - Meet at Interpretative Cenre, Cavan Burren Park, Blacklion GPS 54.26, -7.88
Experience the magic of the Summer Solstice with local Geopark Guide Seamus O’hUltacháin at Cavan Burren Park. Enjoy a guided sunrise walk around this amazing relict landscape. Walkers will be guided to the famous prehistoric monuments of Cavan Burren Park to experience how our ancestors related their place of burial and worship to the astronomical phenomenon which marks the longest day and shortest night of the year. Afterall these were the first farmers – to whom the recurrence and certainty of the seasons was of utmost importance. They observed the cosmos and marked the lengthening and shortening of days by orienting their megaliths, standing stones and even their directional ridges carved on glacial erratics to sunrise or sunset at the solstices, equinoxes and the cross quarter days of Imbolc, Bealtaine, Lughanasa and Samhain. Not only were they the first farmers – but they were astronomers, engineers and accomplished artists whose ingenuity and artistry can still clearly be read on this fascinating relict landscape.
