Discover The Geopark

Doohatty Glebe forest gives walkers access to the impressive cliffs and panoramic summit viewpoint of Benaughlin, which is a 373 metre high mountain in the Cuilcagh range. Local geology is made up of sandstone, limestone and shale.

Lough Oughter and its associated loughs is a maze of waterways, islands and some ninety small lakes along the course of the Erne River. The lakes are shallow and the water is well-mixed and nutrient-rich supporting a wide variety of birds and other wildlife.

The Hamilton Trail, a 6km long looped walk and part of the Failte Ireland's Looped Walk Network, begins at the Town Lake in Killeshandra.  Part of the walk goes through the old Castle Hamilton Demesne, located on nlands that were granted to Sir Alexander Hamilton as part of the Plantation of Ulster in 1610.

The amenity site on the shores of Annagh Lough offers access to the wildfowl sanctury that makes up part of the Lough Oughter Special Area of Conservation.

The site of Drumlane Abbey contains a church and a round tower.  The abbey dates back to the year 555 and the founder is believed to be Saint Colmcille.

Turbet Island is home to an Anglo-Norman motte, a steep-sided mound of earth with a flat top and bailey, an enclosed area that once contained houses and other buildings.  The island was an ideal crossing point on the River Erne and was probably the first major settlement in the town of Belturbet.

This stretch of water links two of Ireland's most important rivers, the Shannon and the Erne, and was known as the River Grainne prior to being canalised in the 19th Century.  There is a delightful 5km walk alongside the canal.

Saint Mogue's Island is reputedly the birth place of Saint Mogue, a noted early Irish Saint.  Born in the 6th Century, Saint Mogue, also known as Saint Aiden, founded the nearby Drumlane Abbey in addition to many other churches and monasteries.

One of County Cavan's 365 lakes, Brackley Lough is located at the boundary between the rolling drumlins of mid-Cavan to the south and the rugged uplands of Cuilcagh Mountain to the north.

These wells contain water that is rich in naturally occurring minerals such as Sulphur and it was believed that these minerals gave the water healing qualities.

The viewpoint offers wonderful views of Cuilcagh Mountain and of Upper Lough Erne with its many drowned drumlin islands.

Tullydermot Falls occur in the upper reaches of the Cladagh River, a tributary of the River Erne, that flows eastwards from its source in the Cuilcagh Mountains towards Swanlinbar.

A good opportunity to see the contrasting landscapes of the Geopark - from more rugged northern mountains to gently rolling drumlin lowlands to the south.

The name Glangevlin is said to have derived from the mythical cow Glas Gaibhleann, which belonged to Gaibhen the blacksmith of the Tuatha De Danann, an ancient tribe said to have inhabited this area 5000 years ago.

Dowra is the uppermost navigation point on the River Shannon where a bridge crosses from County Cavan into County Leitrim. Dowra is a close to several popular walking routes – the Cavan Way, the Leitrim Way and the Miner’s Way.

Garvagh Lough is linked to complex underground river systems.  Local stories say that the area was used for distilling illegal spirits or potin, and when two revenue officers were approaching the stills were thrown into the lake and later found 2km away in the Shannon Pot.

There are three cashels found in the townland of Moneygashel; the central one is regarded as one of the finest of its kind in Southern Ulster.

The magnificent 50 metre high limestone cliff that makes up the Hanging Rock is a well-known landmark along the road from Blacklion to Florencecourt.

The Cottage Lawn is an amenity area in the village of Belcoo on the shores of Lough MacNean and alongside the Belcoo River.  It is home to some exceptional mature trees and offers fine views across to the Hanging Rock and Cuilcagh Mountain.

The Lough MacNean recreation area sits on the tranquil shore of Upper Lough MacNean but can also be a pleasantly lively spot where children and adults enjoy the well maintained adventure playground and exercise equipment.

White Fathers Cave is one of many limestone caves in the Geopark and is a particularly good example of an active river forming a cave.  The cave is named after the monks who lived in the nearby former monastery, now a prison.

Enniskillen Castle was built almost 600 years ago by the local Irish chieftains, the Maguires.  For more information visit the Enniskillen Castle website.

Devenish Island is one of the finest monastic sites in the north of Ireland and its history can be traced back to the 6th Century when it was founded by Saint Molaise.

The largest and best preserved of the Plantation Castles in the Geopark.  Monea Castle was built in 1618 for Malcolm Hamilton. For more information click here

This small island can be reached via the public jetty.  It is one of several important ecclesiastical sites located along the natural waterways of the Geopark.

Garrison is a small village beautifully located on the shores of Lough Melvin where motorists and cyclists can enjoy the lough shore amenity area with fine views across the water to the Leitrim hills.

This forest contains a delightful mix of coniferous and broadleaved trees with each season bringing its own atmosphere to this beautiful lakeside forest. Fore more info Click here

Florence Court Forest Park covers an area of 1,200 hectares and this old estate forest and moorland adjoins Florence Court House.

Ballintempo is predominantly coniferous forest with large areas of open bog land and wooded gullies.  For more info click here. 

Carrigan Forest is a large block of coniferous forest where walkers and cyclists can visit sparkling Lough Formal and follow quiet forest tracks where they are unlikely to meet anybody else except perhaps some wild deer. Click here for more information.

Named after the larger of two small hills that dominate the landscape here, Big Dog and Little Dog.  Legend tells that these hills are named after Bran and Skeola, two Irish wolfhounds belonging to the legendary giant Finn MacCool. Click here for more information

Conagher Forest contains the magical Correl Glen, which is just across the road from the entrance to Lough Navar Forest. The Glen walk has it all – waterfalls, rushing streams, woodland, blanket bog and scenic views of rugged countryside.

A designated nature reserve containing a delightful nature trail dominated by native woodland.  The ravine carved out by the fast flowing Sillees River is cloaked with species such as Birch, Ash, Oak and Holly.  A variety of species of Butterfly and Damselfly can be seen here during the spring and summer months.

Undoubtedly one of the jewels in the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark, this spectacular forest extends across 2,600 hectares of bog; heath; open water; native woodland; and coniferous forest. Click here for more info

Castle Archdale Forest and Country Park is located on the shores of Lower Lough Erne in an area steeped in history. For more info Click here

One of several Plantation Castles in the Geopark, Tully Castle was sacked by the native Maguires in 1641 and was never lived in again.  The Castle was built in the early 17th Century for the Hume family.

The largest of the islands in Lough Erne, its name is a derivation of Badhba, the Celtic goddess of war.  The island is famous for its carved stone statues known as the Boa Island figures.

Castle Caldwell Forest is a 200 hectare mixed broad-leaf and coniferous lowland forest located on a peninsular along the northern shores of Lower Lough Erne. For more info click here

The oldest rocks in the Geopark, some 895 million years old, can be seen at Tullychurry Forest.  The types of rock here are metamorphic rocks that were subject to intense heat and pressure - linked to the rugged and bleak landscapes of the Sperrins or the Donegal Highlands.

A tranquil haven for a short walk, the stepped profile of the river here is due to the horizontal layers of sedimentary rock being slowly eroded by the Bannagh River.

Drumskinny is an intriguing 4,000 year old prehistoric monument of 39 standing stones aligned in a circle that was built 4,000 years ago. The site also contains a prehistoric cairn and a row of 23 small standing stones.
